Painting, and collage in particular, has long been a subsidiary artistic activity to Philip, from his time as a Graphic Design student at the Royal College of Art in the late ‘70s, to running his own graphic design practice till 2015.

Born in Norwich into a creative family, he has until recently worked with his son, Joseph from the riverside studio they occupy, upriver in Mortlake. Being a ‘visual magpie’ he has constantly collected discarded material for his collages and constructions, the twice daily tides of the Thames providing much flotsam and jetsam to reappropriate. His collages in particular utilise old bookcloth from discarded volumes and various printed ephemera with a mix of wallpaper painted in the colour palette of his choice for each work.

Given his education in form, layout and space, his output unsurprisingly maintains a strong graphic undercurrent.

'The Blue Decanter' will be on show in the cafe this spring. To purchase this piece, or more of Philip's work, visit: philipmarkcarter.com
